CCP Games today announced the official title and additional details for their much-anticipated blockchain project, previously known as Project Awakening. The new game, EVE Frontier, is a space survival game set within the expansive EVE Online universe. Frontier promises to be a single-shard MMO, creating a vast sandbox where players coexist and strive to survive in a shared, dynamic environment. CCP Games has plans for a closed playtest in the near future, with interested players able to sign up for participation on the Frontier website.
EVE Frontier transports players to a distant future where they awaken from stasis amidst the ruins of a fallen civilization. Exploration and resource utilization become paramount for survival as players fuel and upgrade their ships while engaging in combat against rogue AI patrolling the cosmos. A unique feature will allow players to create their own custom currencies and establish marketplaces to trade goods, services, and even reputation.
CCP Games’ commitment to blockchain gaming is underscored by their $40 million investment last year. The developer has conducted extensive testing of EVE Frontier, or Project Awakening, through multiple phases, with the upcoming closed playtest marking Phase IV. According to the developers, players will have the opportunity to rebuild space through an open-ended platform called Smart Assemblies, referred to as “enhanced base-building” in the Frontier FAQ. These structures offer a variety of possibilities and are “imbued with a programmable layer that links the world of the Frontier to the real world outside of it.”
