MetaMask Unveils Baanx-Powered Crypto Debit Card with Mastercard Integration

Andrei IonescuBy Andrei IonescuWednesday, 14 August 2024, 14:00No Comments2 Mins Read

MetaMask has announced the pilot launch of its new MetaMask Card, a crypto debit card powered by Mastercard and fintech platform Baanx. This innovative card enables users of the popular crypto wallet to spend their cryptocurrency for everyday purchases.

    Limited Pilot Phase

The MetaMask Card is initially available as a digital-only product, with a limited release targeting a few thousand users across the European Union and the United Kingdom. The card’s availability in this pilot phase is aimed at testing its functionality and user adoption before a broader rollout.

    On-Chain Crypto Management

To use the MetaMask Card, users must hold their cryptocurrency on the Linea network, which is managed through MetaMask. As a self-custodial wallet, MetaMask ensures that users retain control over their private keys, providing enhanced security and autonomy over their assets.

“This gives people more freedom to spend their assets; in this case, crypto,” said Lorenzo Santos, Senior Product Manager at ConsenSys. “MetaMask Card represents a major step to removing the friction that has existed between the blockchain and traditional payments. This is a paradigm shift that offers the best of both worlds.”

Comparison with Other Crypto Debit Cards

The MetaMask Card joins a growing market of crypto debit cards, including those powered by Baanx such as the CL Card, which allows Ledger users to spend their cryptocurrency at any location that accepts Mastercard. This card aims to bridge the gap between cryptocurrency and traditional financial systems, offering users increased flexibility and convenience.

In comparison, other crypto debit cards linked to centralized, custodial platforms, such as the Coinbase Card and Crypto.com Visa Card, also provide similar functionality, allowing users to spend their crypto assets in a variety of everyday transactions.
