Tensions between the United States and China are rapidly escalating following President Donald Trump’s announcement of potential further tariffs on Chinese goods. In a statement released via his Truth Social account, President Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports if China doesn’t rescind its recently implemented 34% retaliatory tariffs by April 8, 2025. This new threat comes just days after the President announced a 34% “reciprocal” tariff set to take effect on Wednesday, April 10th, adding to the existing 20% tariff already in place.
With Trump’s New Move, China May Face 104 Percent Tariffs
The President’s statement accused China of “record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation.” He reiterated his stance that any country retaliating against U.S. tariff measures would face immediate and significantly higher tariffs in response.
If implemented, the combined tariffs could reach a staggering 104%, according to a senior White House official. This dramatic escalation significantly raises the stakes in the ongoing trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies.
President Trump’s statement also indicated the termination of all planned talks with China, while simultaneously announcing the commencement of negotiations with other countries who have requested meetings.
